ABOUT
Aberdovey Swim was founded by Mike Alexander in 2017. The idea was conceived early in 2012 when he started working as Senior Instructor for The Outward Bound Trust in Aberdovey. With countless canoe and kayak journeys, jog & dips, jetty jumps and lots of personal swimming in the Dovey/Dyfi estuary it seemed a shame that more people weren’t regularly swimming in such a beautiful and dynamic stretch of water. Taking part in the local triathlon, run by Cerist Tri, was another inspiration.
Between 2014 and 2017 Mike trained extensively in the Dovey/Dyfi estuary for the OTILLO World Series and BRECA National Championships in swimrun. It was during this time that his ideas firmed up regarding the great scope the estuary had to offer swimmers.
The first Aberdovey Swim was held with great success in September 2017. Special thanks go to the Dovey Yacht Club, The Outward Bound Trust, Dan Wyre Photography, WILD TRAIL Snacks, and Head Swimming for helping to get it off the ground.
Aberdovey Swim has now brought people from far and wide to embrace the tide, and encouraged more locals to use tidal planning to make the most of this fabulous estuary more often.
A local swim group The Dyfi & Dysynni Dippers have since formed and are now regular year-round dippers in these waters.
If you are not ready for the tide, or you just fancy some fresh water swimming in a beautiful location, then try our new event: Tal Y Llyn Swim, a glacial ribbon lake that lies at the foot of one of Snowdonia’s most iconic mountains - Cadair Idris.
Through a partnership with The Tyn Y Cornel Hotel we have improved access to Tal Y Llyn for swimmers. If you want to swim in the lake independently just call into the hotel to let them know and be sure to buy some tea and cake! Cerist & Aberystwyth Triathlon Clubs now regularly train there. It’s great to see so many people enjoying such a stunning swim spot.
Through the partnership with The Tyn Y Cornel Hotel CADAIR X (www.cadairx.co.uk) was born, who knows what the future will hold...
Keeping our events small helps to maintain our friendly, dynamic, adventurous and fun approach.
